Kaylin Anderson from Girl Scout Troop 383 dedicated her Silver Award to helping the adaptive art classes for Fulton County. In particular she wanted to create a long-lasting but sustainable scissor for special needs students to be able to use. Her criteria were the scissors must be stable as to not move or topple when used. They must be easily repairable in case the scissor breaks. And last, they must be visually appealing.
The first criteria was accomplished by carefully measuring and prototyping various designs until the weight to length ratio kept the scissor stable. For added stability she added pads to the bottom so that the scissors would not slide while in use.
For her second she chose a moderately priced safety scissor. These are attached to the base using simple screws. In case the scissors or strap were to break these can be easily unscrewed and then with a simple drill be replaced. This also adds to her sustainability as in theory the scissors could last through many replacements.
For the last criteria she sanded each block. Careful preparation was made to make sure no splintering would occur. Then each block was spray painted and sealed. Last all the blocks were given different unique designs that would be appealing to her.
In all she spent 50+ hours total on the project from design to final product.
