Ice Cream with Ms. Sara

What’s sweeter than these ice cream paintings? Getting to help make their own paint! Inspired by Wayne Thiebaud’s use of bright colors and yummy subjects (cakes, ice cream, pastries, and more!), I thought puff paint would be the perfect medium for our fluffy ice cream cones. Each student started by drawing an ice cream cone on their paper with a crayon. Next, students set it aside and learned how to make the paint they would then use for the ice cream. Mixing equal parts glue and shaving cream, students then chose a liquid watercolor to match the ice cream color they wanted to create. We learned how to “scoop” our paint with a paint brush, and they built their ice cream cones using the paint they took part in making. No cone is complete without sprinkles and a cherry, so they pinched pre-cut tissue paper onto their ice cream and used a red kwik stix paint to make their cherry. After a day or two of drying, students each chose one color to use (we used watercolors), and painted their background, helping to highlight the subject. Our end results? A project that looks good enough to eat!
