Train Perspective Lesson

Students made a landscape with perspective featuring a train. First we saw pictures of trains in a book. We also read a story about a girl who travels from the city to the country with her family on a train. We discussed the shapes you find in a train as well as what trains do such as carrying people. Next we saw videos of trains approaching and receding on the tablet. We also saw on the tablet a variety of images of trains in different settings to show foreground, mid-ground, and background. We talked about how things can appear big close-up and smaller far away. To make our art we started with the background drawing a horizon line, zig zag mountains, and a triangle with horizontal lines for the train track. We used watercolor pastels, markers, and paint for the background. Next for the train on a separate paper we drew a variety of shapes with crayon and pencil. When done we traced the entire train and cut it out to glue onto the background. The train overlaps the mountains appearing bigger since it is in the foreground.
